Decided to write a blog? Or been toying with the idea for a while? Perhaps you've already chosen a platform on which to launch it and you're poised ready to write. Just at that moment, your mind goes blank. What to write? What will grab your tribe’s attention? Look no further!

In this blog I walk you through some versatile blog topics, whatever your business or writing ability. I blog to save you time and energy on your blogs, allowing you to get on with the serious job of blogging to grow your biz.

Up close and personal I'm a great believer in keeping it real in biz. You are your brand so share the story of who you are and what makes you tick. Cast your mind back to the topics of choice during your language classes at school… where you’re from, your hobbies and interests, where you like to go on holiday… all these themes make great blog material. They give your tribe the chance to connect with you, and your brand, personally. If you can gain the trust and following of your readers, they're more likely to engage with you on a business level.

Once upon a time…

Become a story teller and tell everyone about how your biz began. Was there a detailed plan or strategy? Was it the realisation of a lifelong dream? Or did you just fall into it by accident? What or who was your business inspiration? Who helped you along the way? Where did it all begin… your rumpus room, lounge or even your garage? Share funny anecdotes of your early days in business and how you overcame hurdles. A chance to throw in some keywords? Sure! But evoking emotions through your personal biz stories is even more key to building a community who are likely to return to read more of what you’ve got to say.

Go behind the scenes

We’re all used to seeing finely-polished pics and posts on our social media feeds, but real life is where it’s at. You only have to look at the ratings of reality TV shows to see this. Whatever your biz, blog about what happens behind the screen. Whether you’re a photographer or a baker, get someone to take pics – and vids - of you in action and post these on your blog with explanations. Professional photos will enhance your posts, but snaps on your mobile will also do when starting out. If you have a team, explain how you all work together and the different roles you do. If you’re a sole trader, mention the people you collaborate with and how they fit into your biz. Take your tribe through a day in your life from start to finish. Bad day? Technology not playing ball? Tell your tribe! Stories like these are gold because they’re so relatable.

Tell everyone how great you are

Now you’ve gained the trust of your tribe, it’s time to tell them that you’re the best person to do business with. It might feel a bit unnatural at first, but mastering the art of selling yourself is integral to boosting your business. A less daunting way of doing this is to create a blog around your customer reviews. As business owners, we set a lot of store by our online reviews so it makes sense to use these for self-promotion. Also, given that this copy has been written for you and will save you precious time, it’d be rude not to capitalise on it!

Time travel

What does the future look like for you and your biz? Do you have some exciting plans in the pipeline? I’m not suggesting that you share your yearly business plan in minute detail, but giving your readers a heads up about what the future holds keeps them invested in you and your plans. Perhaps you’re not sure about the next steps for your biz, or need a little guidance. Ask your tribe! Involve them in the smaller day-to-day decisions. Can’t decide between two styles of gowns to stock in your shop? Unsure about which images to use on your shiny new website? Ask the audience! Not only will this save you a fortune on market research but getting your tribe involved is one of the best ways to boost engagement. If you do decide to use your tribe’s ideas, tag them in posts and feeds to thank them. This kind of collaboration goes a long way towards securing loyal followers.

Ready, set… blog!

So, what’s the key takeaway from this blog about blogs? As you can see from my suggested topics, blog posts shouldn’t be thinly-veiled sales pitches. Instead, they should allow you to connect with your tribe on a more personal level. This softly-softly approach, as opposed to aggressive marketing, works because it subtly shows your tribe why you’re the best person to do business with. Happy blogging!
